The riverfront of the City of St. Louis, north of its downtown, is composed of large tracts of abandoned and underutilized industrial buildings. This ghost town that once housed the City’s industrial core is bordered to the west by vast residential areas with high rates of poverty, which are underserved in many capacities, particularly grocery and produce retailers. This lack of access to fresh produce and a population with limited mobility has lead to a food desert where fast food and highly processed junk foods are more accessible and affordable. FarmWorks attempts to remedy this situation by implementing a radical re-utilization of former industrial sites into intensive urban agriculture centers. Once implemented FarmWorks will form sustainable relationships within the food distribution network in St. Louis by developing ties with a diverse set of partners; ranging from subsidized sales to local grocers to sales and composting agreements with high end restaurants and hotels.
